Breakfast at Frangelli’s Bakery (Philadelphia, PA)

I’m a bit of a conundrum, or at least, I like to say that to make myself sound more interesting. I am firmly in the Dessert-for-Breakfast camp yet I am anti-donut. That does make me fascinating, right? Eventually though, I heard about Frangelli’s Bakery from my buddy Betty. So while I was staying with her in Philly, we walked over to completely indulge in the Franolli, a cannoli/donut mash-up that made me question everything I once thought about this lackluster breakfast option.

Although I tend to find donuts bland, dry, and boring, my Franolli was awesome. The donut itself was light and fresh while the sweet cream stuck to the roof of my mouth in the best way. Despite the low-key nature of the small shop itself, this was a treat meant for a special morning, not one intended for everyday consumption. Sitting on a cold park bench nearby before heading off to the bus, Betty and I inhaled our hefty choices so that we could put our gloves back on. Even with the chilly weather and the guys on the other end of the park probably making a drug deal, this was worth it. For any dessert lover who can stomach a heavy breakfast, the Franolli is a must-try in South Philly.

  1. You’ve got to eventually die of something, if it’s a coronary from too many of them I don’t think you’ll mind! 🙂

Wow! Does the cream taste like actual cannoli cream? I’m in the same camp as you, where I don’t really care for doughnuts. But if it tastes like a soft cannoli, that sounds awesome.

  3. Oh boy does that look amazing! Let the mouth watering commence…

  4. This photo is a thing of (undoubtedly tasty) beauty.

  5. OMG< that thing looks amazing! Never heard of it before. Will have to check out when we visit Philly!!

  6. Yes, as they say, “that dog will hunt!” Looks really good. 🙂
